A Utah native, Kelsy was born and raised in Salt Lake City. Kelsy knew from a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in law. In 2004, Kelsy graduated from high school and attended Westminster College in Salt Lake City. Kelsy received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Westminster College and set her sights on an out-of-state law school.
Despite her love for the mountains, Kelsy decided to use law school as an excuse to live outside of Utah. Kelsy attended law school at Thomas M. Cooley in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
During law school, Kelsy volunteered at a local legal aid clinic and helped people with cases involving divorce, custody, alimony and parenting-time. That is where Kelsy developed a passion for using the law to serve others. In 2011, Kelsy graduated from law school and moved back to Salt Lake City, Utah to begin her legal career.
With the idea of service in mind, Kelsy worked as a prosecuting attorney for nine years. During that time, Kelsy represented both the State of Utah and the United States of America. Kelsy was assigned to handle a large range of criminal cases and specialty assignments, including violent felonies, domestic violence, crimes against children and animals, white-collar fraud, complex narcotics investigations, and a capital homicide. While working as a prosecutor, Kelsy honed her courtroom, advocacy, writing and negotiation skills. Kelsy has conducted over fifty jury trials and hundreds of evidentiary hearings. Kelsy’s experience in criminal law afforded her the opportunity to educate future law enforcement officers at Utah Valley University’s Police Academy.
Feeling it was time to move on, Kelsy decided to make a professional change back to her first passion: Family law. Brown Family Law felt like a natural fit for several reasons. One being that it coincidentally reconnected childhood friends- Jodi, Brown Family Law’s office manager/paralegal, and Kelsy.
Outside of the office, Kelsy can most likely be found with her beloved Australian Shepherd, Finn. Kelsy and Finn both love to travel and seek out adventures. In the summer, Kelsy enjoys hiking, paddle boarding, and camping. In the winter, Kelsy enjoys snowboarding, heated yoga and good documentaries.
