Family law includes divorce and child custody disputes. We helped clients by removing fear about the legal process, and protecting their money and their families.
When I talk about what I do, I say that I’m a divorce attorney. Everyone understands that means I help with divorce and child custody cases.
“Family law” is lawyer jargon for “divorce attorney.”
It also means an attorney who helps with divorce, paternity, and child custody cases.
Sometimes, “family law attorney” also means someone who helps with adoption. I’m an adoptive dad, but we don’t help with adoptions because those cases are too emotional for me. They hit too close to home.
Because they come up so often in divorce, and because we want to help keep our clients safe, family law attorneys also help with protective orders.
A protective order is when there has been domestic-violence between people who are married (or living together) that helps keep the person being abused safe by keeping the other person away.
This is different from a restraining order in that, if someone violates a protective order, they will go to jail. This makes a protective order a more effective means of keeping someone safe.
