A little under a year ago, I started a CEO lunch group. In actuality, it’s a lunch group consisting of Salt Lake attorneys who run their own law firms. Most of the members are family law attorneys, but we have others from business litigation, probates, estates, personal injury, etc.

We get together at one of our offices on a Friday, eat lunch, talk, and have a presentation on some aspect of law office management. It’s a way to share ideas that will help us improve our law firms and improve as attorneys.

Our last lunch consisted of Café Rio and a roundtable discussion in which we introduced a business book, article, or podcast that has helped us improve.

Business Books

Here are the books we discussed:

  1. Unlimited Powerby Tony Robbins

Yes, Tony Robbins. I know, it seems hokey, but he has some good stuff (as you can tell, this was my selection). Specifically, we discussed chapter 11 Limitation Disengage: What Do You Want? It goes through effective goal setting by imagining what you want to achieve, and then setting specific time limits and steps to achieve each goal. It also suggests mapping out your perfect day, and working backward from that to see what you need to accomplish to create that day. It’s actually powerful stuff.

  1. The E Myth Revisitedby Michael Gerber

This is a powerful book about the importance of becoming an entrepreneur and systematizing your business so it doesn’t depend on you to run correctly. I think this was voted the #1 small business book of all time by Forbes. In any case, it’s a great book that will change the way you think about your business.

  1. Winners Never Cheatby Jon Hunstman

This is a quick business philosophy book from Jon Huntsman, Utah’s resident philanthropist and business guru. Gist: business success is built on high levels of integrity.

Business Podcasts

And now the podcasts:

  1. Entreleadership Podcast

This is Dave Ramsey’s business development podcast. Episodes air weekly and include interviews with the very best business minds. Well worth the listen.

  1. The Entrepreneur’s Radio Show

Travis Lane Jenkins’s podcast about all things entrepreneurial. Travis is a Texas-based entrepreneur who came from very humble beginnings to found and grow many successful businesses. Some of the early shows are a bit hit-and-miss, but the newer ones are full of useable information to help growth.
