Private Adoptions

Generally, there are two types of non stepparent adoptions: agency adoptions and private adoptions. Agency adoptions are exactly what they sound like: adoptions undertaken with help from and adoption agency. Agency adoptions work well for most people (Attorney Marco Brown and his wife used an agency when adopting their first son).

Private adoptions are simply adoptions in which an agency's assistance is not used. In private adoptions, the adoptive parents find their adoptive child, commonly through advertising, family connections (e.g., an underage niece becomes pregnant and wants to give her child for adoption), or doctors. The adoptive parents also procure the services of an attorney to ensure all laws are followed and the adoption is finalized correctly.

So, why would you choose a private adoption if they can just get an agency to do everything? Well, there are a few reasons:

  • Increased control: You tend to have a little more control over the adoption process. You can also have a wider range of children to choose from if they advertise correctly.
  • More information: You can gather more extensive information regarding birth mothers and families than agencies.
  • Shorter search: Depending on the situation, you may be able to find your adoptive child sooner than you otherwise would with an agency.
  • Immediate bonding: In most private-adoption situations, you would bypass foster care and take your baby home from the hospital. This allows for more immediate bonding between yourself and your child.

Of course, with increased control over the process often comes increased stress. Also, since costs aren't fixed as they are in agency adoptions, private-adoption costs are somewhat fluid. This said, private adoptions normally cost between $10,000 and $15,000, which is less expensive than most agency adoptions. At that price range, an adoptive family will likely recoup most their expenses (including attorney's fees) through the federal adoption tax credit.
